About Powder Brows

Eyebrows hold significant importance in today’s beauty trends, with various styling options available. While microblading remains popular, it might not be everyone’s preferred method. Some individuals may prefer the appearance of brow powder over pencil strokes, or their skin type may not be suitable for microblading. Fortunately, there are alternative Permanent Makeup (PMU) methods for eyebrow tattooing, including options like powder brows. These alternatives offer flexibility to cater to diverse preferences and skin types.

What Are Powder Brows?

Powder brows, also known as powder brow tattoo or shaded brows, is a semi-permanent makeup method for enhancing eyebrows. In this procedure, the artist uses a tattoo machine designed for the dotting technique or pixelization to insert PMU pigments into the top layers of the skin. This technique creates a powdery eyebrow effect, resulting in misty and powdered brows. While similar to microshading, powder brows yield more dramatic results. Despite resembling the microblading procedure, the techniques and final outcomes differ. The powder brows process is a two-step procedure, involving the initial pigment insertion and a touch-up 6-8 weeks later. It aims to achieve customized fullness and a flattering arch shape that enhances your natural beauty and facial features.

Who Are Powder Brows For?

The powder brows procedure is generally suitable for most individuals seeking semi-permanent makeup, with many qualifying as good candidates. It’s especially favorable for those with oily skin, a skin type that may pose challenges for some other PMU treatments. However, there are certain considerations that clients should keep in mind before opting for this procedure, including potential restrictions related to specific medical conditions. It’s essential to discuss individual factors and expectations with the PMU artist to ensure a successful and satisfying outcome.

What Is the Difference Between Microblading and Powder Brows?

Although both procedures involve inserting pigment into the skin’s surface layers, powder brows and microblading differ significantly in technique and results. Microblading creates individual strokes resembling eyebrow hairs, while powder brows use tiny dots to achieve a misty, powder-filled brow. The outcome resembles makeup with shading underneath the hairs. One advantage of powder brows over microblading is their longer-lasting effect, typically around 18 months on average without touch-ups. The choice between microblading and powder brows depends on personal style preferences. Unlike microblading, powder brows offer a look reminiscent of precisely applied brow makeup rather than a perfectly natural appearance.

What Are the Pros of Powder Brows?

Choosing powder brows provides several advantages. It utilizes a more traditional tattooing method, resulting in longer-lasting effects. This procedure is suitable for all skin types, including oily skin, which can be problematic for microblading. Many clients return for color boosts after 12-18 months. Additionally, the final appearance of the eyebrows is more defined and dramatic, resembling the look of wearing eyebrow powder.

Can Microblading Be Combined with Powder Brows?

Combining the powder brow technique with microblading results in a distinct effect known as powder microblading or combo brows. This technique involves incorporating very fine hair strokes filled in with smooth shading, enhancing the overall texture and appearance of the eyebrows.

How Long Does the Procedure Take?

The whole powder brows treatment usually lasts around 2 hours. The length of the treatment mostly depends on how experienced the artist is.

What Does the Powder Brows Treatment Look Like?

The creation process for powder brows involves several steps: Step 1: Consultation and Cleaning Begin with a discussion with your artist about your desired look. It’s helpful to wear your usual brow makeup during the consultation for the artist to understand your preferences. The artist then prepares the brow area by thorough cleaning. Step 2: Numbing Cover the eyebrow area with a topical anesthetic, left on for approximately 20 minutes until it takes effect. Step 3: Choosing a Pigment Collaboratively decide on the eyebrow color based on your hair and skin tone. Step 4: Measuring and Mapping Measure the eyebrow area, considering face shape, symmetry, and facial features. Draw the outline of the arch shape, starting the application once you’re satisfied. Step 5: Needling Process Create fine dots using a specialized machine and cover them with pigment. If there is any discomfort, additional numbing cream can be applied (with access and permission). Step 6: Implementing Pigment Add a final layer of pigment and clean the eyebrow area. Step 7: Touch Up Book a touch-up after your powder brows have healed to fill in any gaps where the pigment hasn’t taken or healed properly.

Do Powder Brows Hurt?

As soon as you heard about a needle machine being involved, your mind probably went straight to the question do powder brows hurt? This is a difficult question to answer, mainly because the definition of pain varies from person to person. People who wax or pluck their eyebrows regularly will not find the procedure very painful, whereas someone who has never had their brows plucked might feel some level of discomfort. The good thing is that the artist will use a safe topical anesthetic cream that they will apply to your eyebrows in order to ease the procedure as much as they can. That said, during healing your powder brows might feel sensitive and itchy, which might be more uncomfortable than the procedure itself.

What Should I Know Before the Treatment?

Preparation for the powder brow procedure begins before entering the salon. Consider the following:

  • Bring Your Makeup and Reference Photos: Ensure you bring your usual makeup and reference photos of your desired look on the day of the powder brows appointment.
  • Prioritize Your Health: Ensure you are in good health. Before the procedure, completion of a medical history form is required.
  • Avoid Caffeine and Alcohol: Refrain from consuming caffeine or alcohol at least 48 hours before the procedure.
  • Avoid Blood Thinners: Steer clear of blood thinners such as Ibuprofen, Aspirin, Niacin, Vitamin E, B6, Omega 3, Gingko Biloba, or evening Primrose for at least 1 week before the procedure. If medically necessary, consider adjusting the appointment date.
  • Consider Menstrual Cycle: Pay attention to your menstrual cycle and avoid booking the treatment during that time, as it can increase pain sensitivity.
  • Pre-Appointment Care: Refrain from waxing, tanning, or tinting the eyebrow area at least 3 days before your scheduled appointment.
  • Avoid Anti-Aging Treatments: Avoid anti-aging treatments like microdermabrasion, chemical peels, lasers, or facials for at least 2 weeks before your appointment.
  • Facial Injections: Do not opt for any facial injections at least 1 month before your powder brow procedure.

How Long Does It Take for Your Powder Brows to Heal?

It’s crucial to understand that the outcome of the powder brow treatment is influenced by various factors, including medications, skin characteristics (oiliness, sun damage, thickness, or thinness), unique pH balance, alcohol consumption, smoking, and post-procedure aftercare. As a result, the healing process for powder brows can vary from person to person. After the procedure, you may experience swelling and redness, which should generally subside within 4 days, although individual experiences may vary. It’s important to be aware that the result will appear approximately 50% darker than the desired effect initially, and it will take 4-10 days to lighten. The true colors will become visible around 1 month after the procedure. During the healing of powder brows, scabbing is a common and potentially inconvenient stage for most clients. It is crucial to avoid picking at the scabs to prevent unattractive patchiness. Seeing each stage of the powder brows healing process through and allowing the skin to recover is essential. Once the brows are fully healed, any challenges faced during aftercare will be forgotten.

When Should You Get a Powder Brow Touch Up?

The powder brow touch-up appointment is scheduled no earlier than 30 days after your initial procedure. During this session, adjustments can be made to enhance the shading and intensify the color, addressing any fading that may occur during the healing phase. Additionally, you have the opportunity to choose darker or warmer colors and correct the shape. This touch-up is crucial for fixing areas where the pigment may not have taken correctly. While subsequent touch-ups are not as obligatory as the first one, getting one at least every 6 months is recommended if you want your powder brows to maintain their longevity and vibrancy.
